Perhaps Chichén Itzá is the best known Mexican archaeological site but my favourite is Palenque. Firstly it is not so crowded, secondly one does not see the numerous hawkers selling their touristy products but thirdly and most importantly it is it’s surroundings. Palenque is everything an archaeological site should be: mysterious, solemn, well preserved and imposing in its magnificent jungle environs. The Mayan first settled here as early as 100 BCE and the city reached its pinnacle between 600 and 800 CE.
