Playa de las Canteras, Gran Canaria – Spain

Playa de las Canteras, Las Palmas, Canary Islands

The weekend in the big city of Las Palmas where the city meets the beach. There aren’t many capital cities in the world where the beach is part of the city. Here in the north of the island the majority of the people that use the beach are the locals, there are very few tourists. What really impressed me was that at at 10:00pm when the beach is almost deserted, there is no rubbish lying around. Everyone uses the beach, the young, the middle-aged, the elderly and the very elderly. Also there are facilities for the disabled so that wheelchairs can easily get onto the beach and the wheelchair-bound have special showers available. The population of Las Palmas is about 500,000.
