On our way to the market in Otavalo we stopped at Puerto Lago to have a look at the manufacture of Panama hats. There is a family living nearby from Montecristi, the home of Panama hats. The superfino, as worn by Al Capone takes 8 months to complete and costs US$1,200. After buying a non-superfino I went outside and photographed the lake. I think it’s time that they are called Ecuadorian hats, not Panama hats.
