Spectacularly positioned on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean, Tulum is a late-Maya site that was at its height from AD 1200 until the arrival of the Spanish. It is thought that the site was originally called Zama, or “dawn”, reflecting its location on the east coast. Its inhabitants traded with Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Guatemala and Central Mexico.
